Cabinets
This section will cover the building and installation of our cabinets.
The next major decision we made was the kitchen cabinets. We had to make a decision on the wood as well as the door and drawer styles
We considered several different woods, but in the end decided to use both maple and lyptus with a natural finish. The perimeter cabinets will be maple while the island will be lyptus. We will have a bookcase type cabinet on the corner of the island that will be in maple and the pantry doors will be maple with lyptus inserts. We also decided to do the crown molding in lyptus to tie everything together.
We selected the pueblo style cabinet doors, but will use a solid drawer front with a waterfall edge. The photo shows the maple door in the pueblo style. The lyptus image is not in the door style we chose, but one we considered.
Day 47—More Cabinet Work
September 9, 2008
Richard and Donna arrived just a few minutes after Julie around 7 am this morning to work on the cabinets. They put in a full day installing the rest of the uppers in the kitchen and wet bar area, adjusting doors, installing rollout shelves in the pantry and shelves in all the cupboards and installing the crown molding.
See Construction for details on the other things that happened today.
Day 36 —Cabinet Installation
August 22, 2008
Richard and Cameron put in another full day installing cabinets. Richard brought the new spice drawers—they should work fine. The single large one would have been nice, but this makes everything more balanced. They pretty much finished everything they could before the granite is installed. Richard will be back when it is time to install the rest of the uppers and the crown molding.

Day 35 —Cabinet Installation
August 21, 2008
Richard and Cameron were out bright and early and put in a full day installing cabinets. They pretty much finished the base cabinets in both the perimeter and the island as well as the old wet bar. The doors are on most of those cabinets and they started on the upper cabinets. The corner cabinet and the one next to it will have to wait for the granite installation before they can be completed. The same goes for the wet bar as those full length upper cabinets will be resting on the granite.
Frank did some electrical work and removed some pieces of tile for the beverage fridge.
Julie and I talked about paint and cabinet hardware. We think we have picked out the cabinet hardware, but I want to see and feel it first. So Julie is going to get some samples. Later she brought some samples of some colors we are considering for the south wall and another tile sample. Once the cabinets are finished we will need to make decisions on the floor tile and our backsplash.
Richard will be back in the morning to finish the install. We also have the window people coming in the morning. Another busy day ahead. We won't even talk about the garage sale we have scheduled for Saturday... We are doing the head-in-the-sand thing on that. Neither of us wants to do it, but we need to get rid of a lot of stuff.
Day 33 —The New Cabinets Are Here! The New Cabinets Are Here!
August 19, 2008
It was a long day today, starting at 7:30 with the arrival of the first load of cabinets. They look great! It's the first time we've seen them with the finish coat. They look even better than I expected! I really like the maple, but I love the lyptus! It has a velvety glow to it.
Richard and Jim's sons unpacked the cabinets and then went back to the shop for the second load. When they returned, they started installing the outer cabinets.
Then Julie and Frank discovered a problem with the island... Apparently there were some adjustments to the sizes of some of the cabinets and to make a long story short, the cooktop was no longer centered in the island. Which meant the hood was no longer centered over the cooktop—by 4". Lots of discussion followed on the best way to resolve the issue. In the end it was decided to rebuild that section of the island. The single spice pullout will be replaced with two smaller pullouts, one on each side of the cooktop.
The cabinets from the breakfast nook pantry to the corner lazy susan unit and the set of drawers next to it are in place. They will be back Thursday to install the other pieces. We will have to see how long it will take to remake the island section, but it shouldn't hold things up—at least not yet. We will have to wait on that one section of granite, but can continue on schedule with the majority of the pieces. That includes the other two pieces for the island, the outer perimeter countertop and the old wet bar area.
Day 18 —Chase, Soffits & Cabinets
July 30, 2008
There was a little problem with the organizers we ordered. The spice and larger organizer won't install properly in the cabinets so I went down to Alpine Cabinets to see what Jim had come up with instead. They new organizers will be fine. The doors and drawers look really nice! I took the opportunity to take some more photos. I really like the two-tone maple doors with the lyptus inserts.
Day 12 —Cabinets
July 22, 2008
We went down to the cabinet shop, Alpine Custom Cabinetry in Rancho Cucamonga, and took a look at the progress. It's really looking nice!
