The Demolition
This covers the demolition stage of our remodel.
Day 8 —Digging
July 16, 2008
Frank & Julie removed more concrete and dug out where the utilities will be run. One of the pipes was not located where Frank thought it would be so they had to dig more than they had initially planned. Tomorrow they start putting in the pipes.
The current schedule has the cabinets being installed the week of August 11th!
Day 7 —Trenching
July 15, 2008
Frank started the really noisy part of the demo. Using saws and a jackhammer he removed the concrete to run the gas, water and sewer to the island.
As always the dust and mess has been confined to the bubble and the rest of the house is fine. Tomorrow Frank plans on removing the concrete around the existing utilities.
Day 6 —Shopping
July 14, 2008
Frank & Julie had other things they had to do on Friday and Frank ended up having to deal with another client today.
Julie and I took advantage of the free time and went floor shopping today. After discussions with some friends recently, we decided to have an open mind and take a look at wood floors. Julie and I picked up some wood floor samples as well as additional tile samples. The wood could be nice, but we are still leaning towards tile in the kitchen.
No pictures yet from our latest shopping trip, but I've put up some comments and pictures of some of our earlier choices.
Day 4—The Floor
July 10, 2008
They pulled up the floor tiles today. We still have to decide what we are going to replace it with. Julie and I plan on going shopping next week. I liked our tile—too bad they don't make it anymore...
Day 3—No more wall
July 9, 2008
Its only day three, but the wall is gone! Can hardly wait until the plastic comes down so we can really see how open the space is now. It's going to be so nice.
Day 2—Opening up the Wall
July 8, 2008
The second day of the project sees the wall between the kitchen and living room opened up in preparation for removal.
Frank & Julie did a great job creating a plastic bubble to work in, completely blocking off the kitchen from the rest of the house. They also have damp carpet at the openings to keep the dust from being tracked through the house. There is a zipper in the plastic to get into the work area from the living room and another one to get into the family room. There has been almost no dust or mess at all so far.
Unfortunately the builder ran the electrical through the wall. A lot more work for them when they built the house and more work for our contractors now.
Day 1—Demolition Starts
July 7, 2008
Our designer/contractor, Julie & Frank of For Your Walls Only, made great progress on the first day, pulling out all the cabinets and appliances. The old kitchen is gone!
Before
The kitchen before the official start of the demolition. It's a bit of a mess as we are in the middle of packing everything up. Jack went ahead and removed some doors and hardware while we were packing.
At this point we think we did a decent job of sorting out the stuff we want to keep and a lot of stuff that can go. We'll see how good we really did once we get to move back into the new kitchen!
